I Organized & Decluttered My Entire House Using ChatGPT
How I Used AI to Turn Chaos into Calm—One Shelf, Table, and Fridge Door at a Time
When I first moved into my townhouse over two years ago, I was excited to create a beautiful and organized living space. I’ve always loved home decor and had accumulated plenty of decor and storage items, but I never truly knew how to arrange things in a way that felt cohesive and functional. That all changed when I decided to try something unexpected: using ChatGPT to help me reorganize my entire home.

Why I Decided to Use ChatGPT for Home Organization
As someone who’s neurodivergent, organization can feel overwhelming. I’d often stare at a space and feel unsure of where to start or how to make things look aesthetically pleasing. I had the tools—decor items, bookshelves, and even my collection of fridge magnets—but I struggled to see the “big picture.”
The breakthrough came when I looked at my fridge and thought, “This is such a mess. I like all these items, but they don’t belong together like this.” I snapped a picture, uploaded it to ChatGPT, and asked for help. The AI gave me actionable advice on how to group items into zones and create a visually pleasing arrangement. The results were better than I expected, so I decided to apply this method throughout my home.
How I Used ChatGPT to Transform My Space
Here’s the process I followed for each area:
1. Take a “Before” Photo
I started by tidying the space as much as possible to remove the messiness and reveal the core layout. Then I snapped a photo of the area.
2. Ask ChatGPT for Suggestions
I uploaded the photo and asked ChatGPT specific questions, like “How can I make this bookshelf look balanced?” or “What’s the best way to organize these items for a clean, cohesive look?”
3. Follow the Prompts and Take Feedback
ChatGPT provided detailed feedback, often suggesting moving items, adding more plants, or stacking decor to create a layered look. I’d update the space, take another photo, and ask for more suggestions to refine it.
4. Iterate and Repeat
The more I used ChatGPT, the better it became at giving tailored advice. It even remembered items from other rooms and suggested swapping them to create a more harmonious overall design.
The Results: Before and After
Below are the specific areas I worked on with ChatGPT, with space for the before-and-after photos:
Brown Bookshelf in my dining room
ChatGPT helped me balance the items visually by grouping books and decor by color and height.
White Bookshelf in my office
This was transformed into a clean and bright focal point, with suggestions for plants and symmetrical decor arrangements.
White Ladder in my office
The ladder shelf went from chaotic to curated with ChatGPT’s tips for layering books, plants, and framed photos.
Mantle in my living room
ChatGPT advised creating a central focal point and balancing the decor symmetrically, completely transforming my fireplace.
Coffee Table in my living room
The AI suggested a simple yet chic arrangement using a stack of books, a small plant, and a decorative tray.
Living Room Shelf
I never realized how mismatched this shelf looked until ChatGPT recommended moving some items to other rooms and creating a cohesive theme.
Living Room Side Table
ChatGPT helped me declutter this small table and suggested a minimalist arrangement that feels purposeful.
Fridge
What started this whole project! The AI taught me how to use “zones” to organize my magnets, photos, and lists for a visually appealing and functional fridge door.
Final Thoughts
This experiment with ChatGPT was not just about aesthetics—it was about creating a space that feels organized, calm, and intentional. For me, using AI took away the stress of decision-making and gave me a fresh perspective on my home. Whether you’re tackling a bookshelf, a coffee table, or your entire house, tools like ChatGPT can help you see the potential in your space.
If you’re curious about trying this, I’d recommend starting small—maybe with a shelf or a fridge door—and seeing how the process works for you. Let me know if you give it a shot! And don’t forget to check out my Substack for all the before-and-after photos from this project.

Really interesting idea! I haven't used ChatGPT at all, but I'm intrigued by your suggestion. I've decided to take a picture of my coffee table as it is right now -- a really total mess -- and then do a quick clean-up, put some things away, throw away papers I don't need any longer, etc.; then I'll take another picture of what I want to keep in that area and submit it to ChatGPT. Not sure how to do that yet, but I'll just do one thing at a time. Thanks for the video; I ran across it by accident and decided to subscribe.
